Omega-3 and Inflammation

Written by lsmithers on April 25, 2009

We are all familiar with inflammation from a cut or bruise. We see it with our eyes and feel pain associated in healing. What about inflammation we can neither see nor feel aptly referred to as “the silent killer?”

Inflammation is neither complicated nor mysterious.  It is your body’s protective response to a germ, bacteria or foreign invader threatening your life.  We cannot see the internal process but we see it externally in bruising, swelling and finally healing.  We feel all the stages of a cold or flu until miraculously symptoms abate and we feel well again.  This is inflammation responding as it was intended to protect you.

Think of the process as your body’s defensive army of warriors that rush in to battle germs, bacteria and invaders. They have scientific names such as macrophage, a type of white blood cell that assists the body’s fight against bacteria and infection by engulfing and destroying invading organisms. Another is cytokines, a protein molecule secreted by cells in the immune system.

One warrior breaks down the invader leaving another to gobble and destroy. They each play distinctive roles in the battle to keep infection from overwhelming your body.  This process occurs naturally without your giving it a thought; a built in response that saves your life countless times throughout your years of living.  We don’t hand the body a list of what to fight for it inherently knows what is foreign.

The body detects processed foods, sugars and starches no differently than a germ, bacteria or foreign invader.  The defensive warriors rush out to battle but there is no germ or bacteria; rather a foreign, man made substance the body cannot process now or hundreds of years from now.

This is inflammation running amok each day and everyday as we ingest foods designed for shelf life not human life;  manufactured foods that reduce fat following a faulty Food Pyramid that recommends breads, rice, pasta and cereals drenched in sugar.

We go through decades eating these things lured into a false sense the body can digest whatever we take in.  The power of the human body to endure is amazing but this process cannot run continuously for decades without breaking down over time and often, quite suddenly. All those years of warriors silently battling now knocks loudly at the door and you feel inflammation.

Inflammation in your heart is heart disease; in your eyes macular degeneration; in your cells obesity and in your brain Alzheimer’s. In the last half century, science has defined new inflammatory diseases linked to foods born of the low fat, no fat dietary recommendations intended to eliminate heart disease.

The result is a staggering increase each year of chronically ill children and adults while food and  pharmaceutical companies count profits.

There isn’t a prescription or drug that will bring inflammation to healthy levels.  There are drugs that mask the pain, anti-inflammatories that are merely Band-Aids.  Perhaps this is why most physicians have to be asked to include a C-reactive protein in annual blood work.  Except for Dr. Dwight Lundell.

What will they give you when the test returns high?  There is only one substance that will return inflammation to healthy levels and that is a pure (contaminants removed), powerful Omega-3.

Unfortunately, very few physicians will steer you in that direction.  You will have to take control of your health and your life.

According to Prof.Peskin, MIT researcher, most of the fish oil touting their Omega3s are not helping but hindering us, since these EFAs are merely derivatives (as in EPA & DHA) of the parent oils Omega3 and Omega6. Prof. Peskin maintains these fish oils on the market do more harm than good and there are apparently studies and science that support this.

    Hey Honest Sayer –

You wrote “Apparently there are studies.” No matter how many surface to the contrary, there are studies piled high around the world for the last 20 years attesting to the miraculous healing power of Omega-3.

    Stick with the real science.

    Thanks for your thoughs
